Climate and Weather
Petra sits in southern Jordan's desert region, where temperatures swing dramatically between seasons. Summers (June–August) are scorching, often exceeding 40°C (104°F), making daytime exploration uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. Winters (December–February) are mild, ranging from 8–15°C (46–59°F), with occasional rain and rare snow at higher elevations. Spring and autumn offer the most balanced conditions, though afternoons can still be warm.
Best Time to Visit
October through April is ideal for Petra. October and April offer warm, sunny days (around 25–30°C / 77–86°F) with cool mornings—perfect for hiking the canyon trails without exhaustion. November to March brings fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices (budget hotels from 30–50 JD per night). February and March can be wet, but rainfall rarely disrupts visits. Avoid mid-July through August entirely; the heat makes the 2–3 hour walk to the Monastery genuinely risky.

Spring (March–May): Pleasant temperatures, wildflowers blooming. Midday heat increases by May. Summer (June–August): Brutal heat; many trails close midday. Autumn (September–November): Heat decreases gradually; September still warm but manageable by November. Winter (December–February): Coolest season; occasional rain. Pack layers—mornings are cold, afternoons warming to 15°C (59°F). Bring sun protection year-round; the desert sun is intense even in winter.
