Kyoto shares Tokyo's four-season climate but with slightly more extreme temperatures — hotter summers and colder winters due to its inland basin location. Summer (June–August) is very hot and humid (35°C+) with afternoon showers. The rainy season in June dampens sightseeing but temple moss gardens look spectacular.
The two peak seasons are cherry blossom (late March–early April) and autumn foliage (mid-November). Spring temperatures are ideal at 12–20°C. Winter (December–February) is cold (2–8°C) and occasionally snowy — golden pavilions in snow are magical but book ahead. Avoid the Golden Week holiday period (late April–early May) for crowds.
