Reykjavik weather & best time to visit

Climate Overview

Reykjavik has a subarctic climate with surprisingly mild winters thanks to the Gulf Stream. Despite its northern latitude, temperatures rarely drop below freezing for extended periods. However, the city is known for unpredictable weather—you might experience four seasons in a single day. Wind is constant and often strong, particularly from September through March, so pack layers and a windproof jacket regardless of season.

Best Time to Visit

Summer (June–August) offers the brightest conditions, with nearly 24-hour daylight and temperatures around 12–15°C (54–59°F). This is peak tourist season, so expect crowded attractions and higher prices—hotel rates can reach 25,000–35,000 ISK ($180–$260 USD) per night. If you prefer fewer crowds and still want decent daylight, visit May or September, when temperatures hover around 7–10°C and prices drop by 20–30%.

Seasonal Breakdown

Winter (November–February) brings polar darkness and the aurora borealis, with daytime lasting only a few hours. Temperatures range from -2°C to 2°C (28–36°F), and December–January are the darkest months. Spring (March–May) gradually increases daylight and warmth. Autumn (September–November) transitions quickly into dark, stormy weather but offers stunning golden light in September and wildlife viewing opportunities before winter.
