Santorini experiences a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. From June through September, temperatures regularly reach 28–32°C (82–90°F), with July and August being the hottest months. The island receives minimal rainfall year-round, and when it does rain, it's usually between November and March. The Aegean Sea keeps coastal areas slightly cooler, but the volcanic landscape offers little shade, so sun protection is essential during summer months.
Best Time to Visit
Late April through May and September through October are ideal for visiting Santorini. During these shoulder seasons, temperatures hover around 20–25°C (68–77°F), making it comfortable for exploring white-washed villages like Oia and hiking volcanic trails. You'll also encounter fewer crowds than in peak summer and significantly lower accommodation prices—expect to pay €80–120 per night for a decent room in May, compared to €200+ in August.
Seasonal Breakdown
Summer (June–August) brings peak tourism, crowded beaches, and prices at their highest, but also guaranteed sunshine for beach days. Winter (November–February) is quiet and inexpensive but cooler and occasionally rainy—many restaurants and hotels close. Spring and autumn offer the sweet spot: pleasant weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices. If you're traveling on a budget, aim for early May or late September when tourist infrastructure is fully operational but prices haven't peaked.
