Things to do in New York City

Icons & Views

The Empire State Building (350 Fifth Ave) and One World Observatory (285 Fulton St) both offer stunning city views, though One World is pricier ($42 vs. $29 for the 86th floor observation deck). Time your visit for late afternoon to catch both daylight and nighttime skylines. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island require a ferry from Battery Park; book tickets in advance ($24 adult round-trip) to skip some lines. Allow 4–5 hours total, and bring water—shade is limited on Liberty Island.

Museums & Culture

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 Fifth Ave) is world-class but massive; pick one wing rather than attempting everything. Suggested admission is $28, though New York residents pay less. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) runs $25, and the American Museum of Natural History is $33. Most are open daily 10am–5:30pm. The High Line, a free elevated park built on an old railway, stretches 1.45 miles through Chelsea and is perfect for a casual walk and people-watching.

Neighborhoods & Food

Explore Greenwich Village for brownstones and indie shops, or head to Chinatown for dim sum under $5 per plate. Times Square is touristy but unavoidable; skip overpriced restaurants there. Instead, grab a $3 slice in Midtown or try food carts throughout the city. The Brooklyn Bridge walk (pedestrian path on the north side) is free and offers postcard views. Best visited early morning to avoid crowds.
