Things to do in Trabzon

Sumela Monastery

Perched dramatically on a cliff face 1,200 meters above the Altındere Valley, Sumela Monastery is Trabzon's most iconic attraction. This Greek Orthodox monastery, founded in the 4th century, features stunning Byzantine frescoes, carved chapels, and panoramic views across lush green valleys. The site is about 45 kilometers south of the city center, reachable by car or organized tours (roughly 80–120 Turkish Lira). Allow 2–3 hours for the visit, including a moderate 10-minute uphill walk to the entrance. Entry costs around 50 Turkish Lira. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water, especially in summer months. The monastery is less crowded in early morning or late afternoon.

Hagia Sophia of Trabzon & City Exploration

In the city center, Hagia Sophia of Trabzon (now a mosque) showcases remarkable Byzantine architecture and intricate mosaics dating to the 13th century. Entry is free, though modest dress is respectful. Nearby, explore the charming Uzun Sokak (Long Street) for local shops, cafes, and authentic Turkish atmosphere. The Trabzon Castle ruins offer historical context and viewpoints over the Black Sea coast.

Beach & Coastal Activities

Trabzon offers access to Black Sea beaches like Akvali and Uzungöl (a pristine alpine lake 90 kilometers away, ideal for day trips). Local restaurants serve fresh seafood at reasonable prices. Consider a guided tour to nearby tea plantations or the scenic Rize region—Turkey's tea-growing heartland. Summer months (June–September) offer the best weather for outdoor activities.
