Climate Overview
Marrakech sits on the edge of the Sahara Desert, giving it a hot, arid climate with dramatic temperature swings between seasons. Summers are intensely hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C (104°F), while winters are mild during the day but can dip to near freezing at night. The city receives very little rainfall year-round—most precipitation falls sporadically between November and March. The Medina's narrow streets and clay buildings trap heat, making shade and hydration essential during warmer months.
Best Time to Visit
October through April is ideal for visiting Marrakech. October and April offer pleasant 25–30°C (77–86°F) temperatures perfect for exploring the Jemaa el-Fnaa square and the Koutoubia Mosque without overheating. November through March brings cooler weather (15–25°C/59–77°F), though evenings require a light jacket. Hotel rates during these months are moderate—expect €60–120 per night for mid-range riads compared to €40–80 in summer. December through January sees the most tourist crowds and highest prices.
Summer vs. Winter Considerations
Summer (June–August) is cheapest for budget travelers, with riads dropping to €30–50 nightly, but daytime temperatures make sightseeing exhausting. Many visitors restrict activities to early mornings and late afternoons. Winter requires bringing layers—the Atlas Mountains are visible on clear days, and nearby Oukaïmeden gets occasional snow. Spring (March–May) brings brief wildflower blooms in surrounding valleys, making it excellent for day trips beyond the city.
