Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Mombasa
Mombasa's best neighborhoods depend on what you're after. The Old Town offers colonial charm and cultural immersion, with narrow streets, historic buildings, and local restaurants, though it can feel cramped and touristy in pockets. Nyali Beach, across the Tudor Creek bridge, is the most popular tourist area—it's peaceful, has the best beaches nearby, and most international hotels are located here. Bamburi, just north of Nyali, offers a good middle ground with beach access, local spots, and less tourist saturation. Likoni, south of the Old Town, is more authentic and less touristy but requires a ferry crossing.
Accommodation by Budget
Budget: Expect $20–50 per night in the Old Town or Likoni. Guesthouses like those around Fort Jesus offer basic, clean rooms. Check reviews carefully, as quality varies. Mid-range: $50–150 gets you a comfortable hotel with decent facilities in Nyali or Bamburi. Places like Coral Beach Hotel or similar chains offer reliability and often include breakfast. Luxury: $150+ takes you to resorts with beachfront access, pools, and restaurants. Serena Beach Resort and Sarova Stanley Nalepo are excellent options in Nyali.
