Japanese cuisine is one of the world's greatest. Beyond sushi and ramen, Japan offers kaiseki (multi-course haute cuisine), okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), takoyaki (octopus balls), and yakitori (grilled skewers).
Each region has its own specialty: Osaka is famous for kushikatsu and takoyaki, Kyoto for refined tofu dishes, Hokkaido for dairy and seafood, and Fukuoka for tonkotsu ramen. Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson) sell surprisingly good food at very low prices.
