5 Days in Tokyo: The Complete Itinerary

Tokyo rewards those who dive deep. This 5-day itinerary balances ancient temples, futuristic districts, and world-class food — giving you a genuine taste of the city's contradictions.

Day 1 — Arrival & Shinjuku

Land at Narita or Haneda, grab your IC card, and head to Shinjuku. Check in and spend the evening wandering Kabukicho and the Golden Gai's tiny atmospheric bars. Dinner at an izakaya.

Day 2 — Senso-ji & Asakusa → Akihabara

Start early at Senso-ji temple before the crowds. Walk Nakamise-dori for street snacks. Afternoon in Akihabara for electronics and anime culture. Evening in Ueno park area.

Day 3 — Harajuku, Meiji Shrine & Shibuya

Morning at Meiji Shrine — serene forested calm in the city center. Walk Harajuku's Takeshita Street. Afternoon shopping in Omotesando. Evening: witness the Shibuya Scramble crossing at rush hour.

Day 4 — Tsukiji, Odaiba & TeamLab

Early morning sushi breakfast at Tsukiji outer market. Cross the Rainbow Bridge to Odaiba for futuristic architecture. Evening: TeamLab Borderless or Planets — a must for digital art lovers.

Day 5 — Day trip to Nikko or Kamakura

Kamakura (1hr): the giant Buddha and zen temples. Nikko (2hrs): over-the-top ornate Tosho-gu shrine complex. Return to Tokyo for a farewell dinner in Ginza.

Practical tips

  • Get a Suica or Pasmo IC card at the airport
  • 7-day JR Pass not worth it for Tokyo-only trips
  • Book popular restaurants 2-4 weeks ahead
  • Konbini (convenience stores) are genuinely excellent for meals
