Gateway of India and Colaba Waterfront
Start your Mumbai exploration at the iconic Gateway of India, the 26-meter limestone arch built in 1924. It's free to visit and offers great photo opportunities, especially at sunset when the light turns golden. The surrounding Colaba area is perfect for a leisurely walk—browse the street food stalls for pav bhaji (spiced vegetable curry with bread) for around ₹40–60, or grab fresh coconut water from vendors for ₹20–30. Nearby, the Taj Mahal Palace hotel (even if you don't stay) is architecturally stunning and houses excellent restaurants if you want a more upscale meal.
Marine Drive and Chowpatty Beach
The 3.6-kilometer Marine Drive promenade, lined with art deco buildings, is perfect for an evening stroll. Head to Chowpatty Beach at the end for authentic street snacks—bhel puri, sev puri, and kulfi (Indian ice cream) all cost under ₹50. The beach is liveliest from 6 PM onward. Note that swimming isn't recommended, but the atmosphere is vibrant and genuinely local.
Museums and Cultural Sites
The Prince of Wales Museum (admission ₹600) showcases Indian art and artifacts in a beautiful colonial building. For film buffs, Bollywood studio tours operate from various locations (₹800–2,000), though book in advance. The historic Hanging Gardens offers peaceful city views with free entry. Visit these attractions during weekday mornings to avoid crowds and peak heat.
