Lecce's greatest draw is its stunning baroque architecture, concentrated in the historic centro storico. Start at Piazza Sant'Oronzo, the main square, where you'll find the Column of Sant'Oronzo and the ruins of a Roman amphitheater just below street level (free to view). The Basilica di Santa Croce is the crown jewel—its ornate cream-colored façade is Instagram-famous for good reason. Entry is free, though donations are appreciated. Just north, the Duomo (Cathedral) sits in its own elegant piazza and is also free to enter. Wander the narrow streets between these landmarks to discover hidden courtyards, smaller churches, and local artisan shops. Most major sites are within a 15-minute walk of each other, making Lecce ideal for leisurely exploration on foot.
Museums and Day Trips
For deeper cultural insight, visit the Museo Faggiano (Via Francesco Rubichi 21), a fascinating private museum housed in a palazzo where artifacts from Roman, medieval, and Renaissance periods are displayed in situ—roughly €5 per person. If you have time, day trips to nearby Otranto (40km, bus €3–5) reward you with a medieval castle and dramatic Adriatic coastline. The Grotta della Poesia near Otranto offers swimming in freshwater springs surrounded by limestone cliffs. Book a local guide through your accommodation for around €30–50 to learn the region's history properly. Late afternoon is ideal for photography, when golden light bathes the baroque buildings.
