Climate Overview
Luxor experiences a hot desert climate with scorching summers and mild winters. From June to August, temperatures regularly exceed 40°C (104°F), making outdoor sightseeing uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. Winter months (December to February) offer much more pleasant conditions, with daytime temperatures around 25°C (77°F) and cool evenings. The Nile Valley receives virtually no rainfall year-round, so you won't need to worry about wet weather regardless of when you visit.
Best Time to Visit
October through March is ideal for exploring Luxor's temples and archaeological sites. November through February offers the most comfortable conditions, with clear skies and temperatures perfect for walking around the Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple Complex. During this peak season, expect higher accommodation prices—a mid-range hotel room averages 400–600 EGP ($13–20) per night, compared to 200–300 EGP during summer. Book accommodations and guided tours in advance if traveling November to February.
Seasonal Breakdown
April-May brings increasing heat (35–38°C) before summer arrives. June-August is best avoided unless you have high heat tolerance; many tourists and local shops close during these months. September sees temperatures dropping but remains hot. Winter visitors should bring light layers for cool evenings and sunscreen year-round. A sunrise visit to the Valley of the Kings (around 6 AM) is magical any season but essential in summer to beat the heat.
