Diocletian's Palace & Old Town
The heart of Split is Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in 305 AD that still dominates the waterfront today. Wandering through the marble-paved streets, underground chambers, and hidden courtyards costs nothing, though entry to specific areas like the Cathedral (5–8 EUR) or the basement (4 EUR) adds depth. The palace is essentially a living museum—locals still shop, dine, and live within its ancient walls. Arrive early morning to beat crowds, and wear comfortable shoes since the stone floors get slippery and navigation is maze-like.
Marjan Forest Park & Coastal Views
Just west of the old town, Marjan Forest Park offers hiking trails through pine forest with panoramic views of the Adriatic. The main loop takes about 90 minutes and is completely free. Stop at viewpoints overlooking nearby islands or relax at Bacvice Beach on the way down—a popular pebbly beach with beach bars serving drinks for 2–4 EUR. The park is accessible on foot from the city center in about 15 minutes.
Day Trips to Nearby Islands
Ferries run regularly to Brač, Hvar, and Vis islands (7–20 EUR each way, 30–60 minutes). Each island offers distinct experiences: Brač has the famous Golden Horn beach; Hvar features lavender fields and nightlife; Vis is quieter with wartime history. Book ferry tickets at the main waterfront terminal, and consider taking a morning boat to maximize daylight on the islands.
