Things to do in Sydney

Iconic Landmarks & Waterfront

Sydney's most famous attractions cluster around the harbour. The Opera House ($45 AUD for guided tours) deserves at least an external visit—the architecture is stunning from multiple angles, especially across the water near Mrs Macquarie's Point. Right next door, the Royal Botanic Garden offers free entry and scenic walking paths with views of the Harbour Bridge. For bridge enthusiasts, the BridgeClimb experience ($289–399 AUD) is thrilling but pricey; the free Pylon Lookout ($15 AUD) at the bridge's southern end provides excellent views at a fraction of the cost.

Beaches & Coastal Activities

Bondi Beach is the most famous (and crowded) option—ideal for swimming between the patrolled flags and grabbing coffee. For fewer crowds, try Coogee or Tamarama nearby. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk (6km, about 90 minutes) is genuinely spectacular and free. Manly Beach requires a scenic 30-minute ferry ride ($8.20 AUD) but feels less touristy and offers similar golden sand and good restaurants.

Museums & Cultural Experiences

The Art Gallery of NSW ($20 AUD, free entry to general collection) showcases Australian and international art with high-quality exhibitions. The Australian Museum (natural history, $15 AUD) is compact but worthwhile for Aboriginal cultural displays. Both offer discounted entry after 5pm on Thursdays. Book ahead for weekend visits, as popular attractions fill quickly during peak season (December–February).
